Winter in Wenatchee just got even better. A brand-new winter recreation area opened offering fresh ways to get outside and enjoy the snow. The Stemilt Wintertime Non-Motorized Area is an exciting addition to Wenatchee’s wintertime outdoor scene, creating new opportunities for winter hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, back country skiing, and sledding, all just a short drive from town.
Located in state forestland between Mission Ridge and Squilchuck State Park, the area spans rolling terrain that becomes a winter wonderland when blanketed with fresh snow. From the small, plowed parking lot, visitors can head out along snowed-over forest roads that are not prone to avalanches, making this area especially well-suited for families, beginners, and anyone looking for a mellow winter adventure.
Shorter outings include Orr Creek Road in the Stemilt Basin overlooking Spring Hill Reservoir, perfect for a quick winter hike or snowshoe (2 miles roundtrip). For those craving a longer adventure, complete one of the loops winding past Upper Wheeler Reservoir (6.5 - 7.5 miles roundtrip). Bringing a map is recommended to navigate the area, and maps are also posted at main trail intersections to help you stay oriented.
The area truly offers a choose-your-own-adventure experience. The trails are ideal for any level of snowshoers or hikers, while anyone looking to cross-country ski should have some intermediate skills to handle the descents. Sledding and snow play are also welcome.

Note that a Sno-Park permit is required and cannot be purchased on location. Purchase a Daily Sno-Park Permit ($25/vehicle) or a Seasonal Non-Motorized Sno-Park Permit ($50/vehicle) online here.
